    The Durande Castle
    Joseph Eichendorff (1788-1857)

This short novel is more dramatic than romantic.

The classic love story is situated in Provence, north of Marseille, in the Durande Castle and the woodlands around.

A young nobleman, while hunting in his father’s forests discovers a beautiful girl, daughter of a forest guard, and sets out visiting her and courting her.

Soon, they are discovered by the girl's brother, and to prevent any further mischief; she is sent to a nearby convent.

Meanwhile, historical revolutionary events are taking place, and violent hordes of population roam the country, looting, and burning.

Castles and convents are the primary targets as they are holding food and wine and gold and riches in vast quantities.

Amidst all these battles around the Durand Castle, the loving couple meets again, and severely wounded, die s in each other’s arms.
