Full of helpful examples uestions and scenarios to improve your interpersonal relationships The focus is on one’s personal life so there are no relevant tips for work

Full disclosure I've known Dr Brenner for over 20 years I was super impressed by what he and his co authors achieved in Irrelationship How we use Dysfunctional Relationships to Hide from Intimacy and came back for the seuel It's at a slight disadvantage for readers of Irrelationship because there is a lot of overlap between the two books This is an inevitable function of the topic the fact is talking about obstacles to intimacy in depth isn't possible without talking about paths toward intimacy and vice versa So it's not as if Irrelationship needed a seuel which would cover the creation and maintenance of healthy relationships The heart of the authors' work is the DREAM seuence which they cover in depth in both books What Relationship Sanity has going for it is different examples the examples are explored in depth so you really get a sense of how their process might realistically play out which bring out additional nuances in the seuence For me the book was enhanced by a few years' life experience since reading Irrelationship I was struck not only by how my own romantic relationships and friendships could be impacted by actively trying to work toward relationship sanity but how the way my team functions at work could be positively impacted by the authors' work Criticisms that the book is basically an advertisement are therapy are on the nose the fact is one of the assets of this book is although it breaks down the process very carefully and doesn't obfuscate so that it makes a good faith effort to empower readers to think through the material and apply it on your own it still maintains clarity about why this kind of work is so challenging and why people turn to therapists for help in doing it I also appreciated their emphasis on the importance of really fundamental spiritual practice breathing and mediation as a foundation for complex interventions in our relational lives They really emphasize how crucial it is to continually ask What is this experience like for me and listen to your own feelings when trying to get to greater depths of intimacy with your partner They don't take any shortcuts here everything they recommend the reader do they make a point of including breathing practice and self reflection as part of the activity This is the missing ingredient in a lot of self help and I think the authors' attention to it sets their work apart
