When I was growing up, my mother worked at a special education school, and when I was in college, I substitute taught at the school I also have a number of friends with special needs children, so I m somewhat familiar with the unique demands placed on the parents However, I ve only seen things from my female perspective I honestly never gave much thought to the impact that a special needs child has on a father Common Man, Extraordinary Call provided me with a completely different perspective When I was growing up, my mother worked at a special education school, and when I was in college, I substitute taught at the school I also have a number of friends with special needs children, so I m somewhat familiar with the unique demands placed on the parents However, I ve only seen things from my female perspective I honestly never gave much thought to the impact that a special needs child has on a father Common Man, Extraordinary Call provided me with a completely different perspective I think it s much easier for mothers to accept their children as is, but for dads, it sof a challenge to wrap their minds around the reality as opposed to their expectations The message of the book can be summarized by a Charles Spurgeon quote in the opening pages, The Lord gets his best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction While the focus of Common Man, Extraordinary Call is specifically dealing with parenting a special needs child, the information that Jeff provides is relevant and useful to anyone struggling with situations they weren t expecting Any parent could benefit from reading Jeff and Becky s powerful story.Note I was given a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review

Working with those affected by disabilities, this book was given to me to read as a recommendation I have read many on this topic but found this one to be very personal and easy to connect with despite the fact that I do not have children with special needs What Davidson has done here is tap into being a guy by relating parenting a special needs child with being drafted into the military It is a positive and motivating comparison, however While he does add plenty of emotion and real world pe Working with those affected by disabilities, this book was given to me to read as a recommendation I have read many on this topic but found this one to be very personal and easy to connect with despite the fact that I do not have children with special needs What Davidson has done here is tap into being a guy by relating parenting a special needs child with being drafted into the military It is a positive and motivating comparison, however While he does add plenty of emotion and real world perspective other than just his own, he doesn t dwell on anything negative Nor does he avoid it Davidson asks some tough questions and offers his thoughts and a plan of attack as well. This book is meant for fathers of children with disabilities, but the concepts that he mentions are really perfect for any dad, to be quite honest There were so many chapters where I found inspirational material that I could apply in my own life.I believe that this would be a perfect read for a father with a child who has a new diagnosis, or a father that might need something uplifting, inspirational, and motivational If you are a church leader, I would highly suggest keeping this on hand to give to members Both church families and staff members would benefit greatly from reading it
