Why has pantheism been so reviled within the Western philosophical theological tradition Can a tenable pantheism be formulated that acknowledges the diversity of the world without reverting to undifferentiated monism Rubenstein sets out to answer these questions and comes up with intriguing answers Also, if that sounds like this is an intense scholarly work, it is, many foot notes, much jargon, hello friends on Goodreads this is the kind of thing I read for fun now that grad school is well in Why has pantheism been so reviled within the Western philosophical theological tradition Can a tenable pantheism be formulated that acknowledges the diversity of the world without reverting to undifferentiated monism Rubenstein sets out to answer these questions and comes up with intriguing answers Also, if that sounds like this is an intense scholarly work, it is, many foot notes, much jargon, hello friends on Goodreads this is the kind of thing I read for fun now that grad school is well in my rear view mirror.Anyway, this is not going to be a scholarly review though, just me gushing about how this book gave me a lot to think about in terms of how traditional theism and even panentheism mypreferred theological perspective can reify toxic hierarchies, as the violation of those hierarchies is often the chief problem that thinks have found in pantheism.More interesting to me, though, are the parallels between her pluralistic pantheism and Buddhism While she correctly identifies the Orientalism in the idea that pantheism is inherently eastern, noting that advaita non dualism is a minority position in Hinduism, such is not the case with Mahayana Buddhism, where since the time of Nagarjuna non dualism has been orthodoxy While this hasoften resembled monistic pantheism, complete with the retained hierarchy of being that she argues this philosophy often entails, a fair number of contemporary Buddhist thinkers have already articulatedpluralistic versions like the one she presents here Thich Nhat Hanh s interbeing in particular would make for a pertinent point of comparison I can appreciate that this was probably outside of her area of expertise, and that she wanted to keep her worknarrowly focused on the internal dialogue within Western philosophy theology cosmology, so no marks against this omission I just hope another author picks up the thread she s started in the future
