Despite being written for children, this book doesn t sugarcoat the Civil Rights movement Nonfiction chapters are interspersed with a fictional young girl s journal, to remind us that the movement was lived before it became history This is the first children s book I ve seen that addresses the sexism of the movement I also appreciated that the book reminds us that the March on Washington and the passage of the Civil Rights Act did not solve the problems of discrimination in the US.

Loved this book It talks about topics such as the Jim Crow Laws, Brown Vs Board of Education and the Montgomery bus boycott It also talks about many different people who played a role in the Civil Rights movement and not just well known figures like Martin Luther King or Rosa parks Melody s journal entries aren t new if you ve read her stories but this is still educational
