  1. Matthew Komatsu says:

This book is a lesson in writing outside one s own experience, which Chopan, as a civilian, has done quite well in treating the veteran experience There were a couple little details he gets wrong, but they were minor issues of place as opposed to military issues I applaud his willingness to tackle something that Phil Klay covered in Redeployment, veteran homecoming, and found the book a worthy companion to Klay s There are a lot of pitfalls to be wary of when stepping so far afield from one s experience, but Chopan does it well in turning out a lovely, haunting collection of short stories.

  2. Nick Gardner says:

This book is a perfect blend of intelligence and heart These stories depict the most depraved acts as well as some of the most heartwarming with characters all suffering the weight of war The prose is clean, clear imagery, some beautiful phrases sprinkled throughout I only wish I had to read.

  3. Katey Schultz says:

Jon Chopan has written the book every writer wishes they could have written stories that are both the fly on the wall, and the beating heart of its characters The prose moves from raw, unfettered observations, to poetic descriptions that reveal the face behind the mask Somewhere in the middle, these unforgettable stories take hold, and don t let go.
