Good conclusion to the series In the previous two books, someone showed that they have a serious grudge against the McCall family Their efforts to destroy what has taken the McCalls four generations to build have grown in intensity, putting lives as well as livelihood at risk Unbeknownst to the rest of his family, Michael McCall has hired a private investigator to discover the truth Because he didn t want them to know about it, Michael insisted that Erin pose as a magazine reporter, putting Good conclusion to the series In the previous two books, someone showed that they have a serious grudge against the McCall family Their efforts to destroy what has taken the McCalls four generations to build have grown in intensity, putting lives as well as livelihood at risk Unbeknownst to the rest of his family, Michael McCall has hired a private investigator to discover the truth Because he didn t want them to know about it, Michael insisted that Erin pose as a magazine reporter, putting her in a difficult situation Erin was intrigued by the case, but not very happy about the deception.Zane was wound up pretty tight about everything that happened in the last few months He was frustrated by the lack of progress in identifying who was behind the vandalism The last thing he wanted was to have a reporter nosing around and making matters worse.I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Erin and Zane There were sparks between them from the start They started out spending time together as Erin did her research for her writing and Zane showed her around There were some interesting exchanges when Zane took exception to some of the questions she asked, as he was afraid she would focus her article on their troubles rather than what the business was about There was also a pretty amusing interview with some locals, as Erin used it to get information about Zane himself before he walked off in a huff and she got to the questions she wanted to ask I did find it a little odd that she wasn tsubtle in her questioning since she was supposed to hide her true purpose Zane s attraction to Erin made him want to spend time with her, and Erin felt the same But that togetherness also had its downside, as Erin feltandguilty about deceiving him Zane sensed that there was something off, but he couldn t figure out what it was When he stumbled on the truth, his feelings of betrayal cut deep I hurt for Erin, too, because she had begun to care about him, too Once the secret was out, though, it was easier for them to work together on the investigation Erin s tenaciousness put her in danger, and Zane s protectiveness soon overpowered his hurt When Erin s life was in danger, Zane realized how important she was to him, if only it wasn t too late A little well delivered advice helped him see his mistakes, and I loved seeing him put his heart and pride at risk The ending was great, with the danger over and everyone with their promising futures. The suspense of this book was very good The prologue laid the groundwork for the increasing intensity and danger We know from the start that the adventure business is struggling a little bit thanks to the actions of a man who has long held a grudge against the three McCall siblings The man is obnoxious and as the loan manager for their business loan also holds a great deal of power over them We get glimpses of the person behind the attacks, as he ramps up his efforts against the McCalls He has an unwilling accomplice whom he blackmails into helping him, and we see the struggles this person has with what is asked of him A couple of twists put Erin right in the middle of the next attempt on the McCalls, and I was on the edge of my seat as she tried to prevent a tragedy I ached for the family as part of the truth was revealed, butwas left in question The final confrontation was intense as desperation caused an unexpected revelation and the bad guy lost it all

If you re after a hero who is a dull, humourless, poor me pity party sadsack devoid of any personality, then all your Christmases have come at once As the book starts, Zane McCall is merely dull as dishwater, but as it progresses, turns into a childish moron He really dragged the book down. The plot involves private investigator Erin Palmer attending the McCall ranch, having been hired by Zane s father, Michael, to find out who has been sabotaging it We the reader know there is both a person u If you re after a hero who is a dull, humourless, poor me pity party sadsack devoid of any personality, then all your Christmases have come at once As the book starts, Zane McCall is merely dull as dishwater, but as it progresses, turns into a childish moron He really dragged the book down. The plot involves private investigator Erin Palmer attending the McCall ranch, having been hired by Zane s father, Michael, to find out who has been sabotaging it We the reader know there is both a person undertaking the sabotage, and a person blackmailing said saboteur into committing the deeds Erin pretends to be a reporter, and hates the fact she s lying to Zane, who she is developing feelings for.None of the set up here made much sense to me, making it evendifficult to get on side with boring, humourless Zane and his relationship with Erin For the life of me, I couldn t see what Erin saw in Zane, other than the fact that he s a hot cowboy Sure, I love a hot cowboy myself, but without any interesting conversation to go with the hotness, how long are things going to last You see, I couldn t quite get my head around why Michael would hire a private investigator to investigate the sabotage, and not tell any of his kids Does he really think they re guilty All indications would be no Not to mention, the fact that Zane s brother and sister were protagonists in previous books means it s 100% impossible it s either of them, because that s the way these books work Basically, the subterfuge is only there so that Zane can get pissed off at Erin when the truth eventually comes to light that she s not really a reporter And boy, is he pissed In fact, the way he carries on and on about her lies and deceit , you might think Erin had been funding terrorists or something Zane isforgiving of the person who turns out to be the saboteur Saying you re a reporter instead of a PI kind of ranks at the bottom of the pile of horrible lies you could tell, in my opinion Zane was basically being an immature turd. But the whole romance didn t work because Erin and Zane were being thrown together by author contrivance, not any real reason for them to be spending any time together Erin keeps on asking Zane his thoughts on the sabotage, and Zane keeps on telling her he doesn t want to talk about it It makes no sense for Erin to keep returning to Zane and asking him questions that she knows he s not going to answer It also undermines any credibility that this woman is the sort of person you want to be hiring as a private investigator Indeed, Erin doesn t solve a thing She s terrible at her job I was also confused by Zane s relation to Josh and Piper The book says Zane and Josh are identical twin brothers, but then I m pretty sure it then goes on to say that Piper is a triplet Did I read that right I m not sure how that s possible They d all have to be fraternal triplets, right Unless two embryos got fertilised at the same time, and then one of them split Probably not worth losing sleep over, I guess The identity of the saboteur is exactly who you expect The identity of the blackmailer is completely arbitrary view spoiler It s some character who has never even been present in the book up until they re revealed as the bad guy hide spoiler This really riles me If it doesn t matter who it is, why even make it a mystery You re effectively wasting the reader s time. There was a nice Christmas tree scene to justify chucking Christmas into the book s title There s a truck rollover sequence that is suspenseful and well written Zane s grovel at the end was good, for those who require that sort of thing I liked Zane s brother Josh I actually have his book somewhere in my TBR pile, so even though this book was underwhelming, I won t approach Josh s book with a sense of dread. But boring, boring Zzzzzzane, his childish behaviour, and the overly contrived way his romance is set up with Erin means that if you pick this one up during a future festive season, prepare for boredom to come gift wrapped
