this is one of the best book i have ever read. Abbas Milani is such a good writer. I hardly recommend it to everybody who like to know about Shah and Hoveida.
I enjoyed every page of it.

  3. Shokufeh شکوفه Kavani کاوانی says:

A must read about Iran's modern history and the story of Hoveyad - Shah's last prime minister......I was only 8 when that all happened so reading them from different point of view was very interesting.

  4. chamanzan says:

An objective book about Hoveyda. Milani's command of english is amazing! ... I liked it as it gave me an insight to the Shah's regime and also the person of Hoveyda and his ultimately sad end. Can't accept his defense that he was only following the orders of the Shah ... after all he could have resigned ... but still I come out feeling sympathetic towards him as a flawed but ultimately good human being.

  5. Scott says:

I'm hesitant to rate and review non-fiction. The story it tells is less dependent on the writer and more dependent on actual events.

In this case, I learned a bunch about the Iranian Revolution and the events leading up to it.

It's worth reading for anyone, especially in today's world. To rate it 4 stars or I really liked it is sort of misleading...it was a completely worthwhile expenditure of my time, however.

  6. Arash says:

Apart from politics, it is a touching and a truly sad story, however, it is not told very remarkably in my opinion.
Now, why apart from politics while it is a book about a very famous politician in Shah's era? As stated in the book too, there are many mysterious about him yet to be unveiled. This book tries to tell the story of his life, but it fails when it wants to analyse what was in his head when making important decisions. More documents are needed, if there are any, to be able to have closer look at him. At least that's what I think.

  7. Re9iNee says:

when started reading this book this is my first thoughts that this book is about Amir-Abbas Hoveyda's Personality, what he did and his portfolio, what he left as his legacy for his people, turns out it's about anything but him, well maybe him a little, maybe you can this book as a reference (English version), the Persian Version of this book showed us Pure Censorship. I would never recommend this book to anyone.

  8. shahram says:

one of the best books i have read in my life .

  9. shahram says:

one of the best books i have read in my life .

  10. Shirin Afrasiabi says:

excellent insite in Iranian politics and ethics during the Pahlavi. Also explains Mr Hoveyda's masterful yet naiive approach to non-Iranians and Iranians that ultimately contributed to his demise!
