This volume was a chore getting through. It was written for serious Protestant Bible scholars, neither of which I am. As Social-Scientists, they laid an adequate foundation to their arguments and sallied forth. I found many of their points strained and generally without spiritual understanding.
They used the Bible as a history which it clearly is not. They used the text of the Bible as being complete although clearly it is not. They used the best ancient texts to translate which are problematical at the least. And, of course, scholarly mumbo jumbo, zip words, and vocabulary owned by their discipline were used with gay abandon.
This said, I did find it engaging enough to read (and mostly re-read-in order to understand the meter and vocabulary with which they wrote.) There were several very valid points brought up as to the importance of the family to this period of Christianity, contrasting it with our day. They clarified the immenseness of death to these ancients and the way we have more or less demeaned it in our day.
The chapters #1, #2, and #7 were the most productive for me, #2 laying out their social scientific framework for the study.
A decent read but it's a commitment so settle in for the long haul.
