Ms Bisland must have been uite an interesting and erudite person The book is filled with thoughtful essays on many topics including travel writers art psychology religion history animals relationships On and on I read the Project Gutenberg e book of this which was prepared from the British edition of 1907 scanned at the Internet ArchiveBefore reading this I was intrigued originally because Elizabeth Bisland was a journalist and later an editor who famously raced around the world against Nellie Bly She wrote her own account too but Bisland was less sensationalisticI read this book in short bursts over a period of months on my tiny phone while waiting for other things to happen Along the way I ended up highlighting some 68 passages that stood out for me I found the various essays on feminism and history to be the most interesting eg one called The Cry of the Women although I was never really sure what to make of them On the one hand she seems to be a feminist while holding other opinions that make me wonder She writes as if there is no longer any ineuality of the sexes and lauds how monogamous marriage is the pinnacle of relations and how good it is for women Late in the volume she calls herself a pagan and I suppose that is what was most heretical about the book in 1907 She seems enad of Rome and Teutonic history at various points she lauds matriarchal society and was definitely not a fan of Christianity or patriarchyHer writing tends to be somewhat flowery and serious prone to flights of excess verbiage but overall charming and well worth reading Some of the essays are dated of course since it was published in 1907 and science has advanced since then But she still says interesting things about almost everythingAlong the way she drops a lot of names that are no longer familiar to most American households so if you do read this you may find yourself wondering who the heck some of those people are And she charmingly elides names of people in her life such as when she has dinner or conversation with H and that sort of thingNow Ms Bisland Consider this a standing invitation to dinner at a restaurant of your choosing And you can leave your husband at home he'd only get in the way

Discovered this journal after reading about her race around the world The entries encompass many topics most thought provoking While she writes about her experiences many of her musings are currently and probably always will be relevant Even when I disagree with her she makes her point beautifully It's a shame this collection is out of print and that the copy I found has so many errorsomissions I am sorry for the poeople who don't care for flowers The amiability they always awake in me is one of my most valued bits of secret property Most of my life I have been poor as the world reckons poverty but in reality I have owned than many millionaires

This was an interesting read It was kind of fun to go back and see what were one woman's thoughts of the day back in the early 1900s Bisland introduced me to other books and authors that I hope to check out And I am very happy that she mentions the diary of Marie Bashkirtseff which I started long ago never finished but wanted to go back and finish it but forgot the author title So hurrah I love it when books introduce you to other books The only issue I had was towards the end when Bisland goes off on Sentimentalists this chapter addresses Booker Washington and slaves And I wish I could go back and tell her that she is a Sentimentalist not for slaves but for the instinctive heroism of the white man of the South She claims that the white man of the south has spent 40 years and than a hundred million educating the negro Really Unfortunately Bisland is uite ignorant on this fact And it's too bad because she is an early animal rights activist But apparently not for the rights of other people
