One of the reasons I like this book the most is that it has the English version on one side and the Spanish version on the other. This is a great book for anyone learning either language. It helps with word recognition and the illustrations help support this.

  2. Angela says:

It's very wordy -- has pages and pages of flowery description & over-uses adverbs like excitedly and happily. Not enough action to engage the littlest readers.

  3. Charlie Hersh says:

A very nice story both in English and Spanish, with lots of clothing- and fabric-related vocabulary. Really vibrant and imaginative illustrations.

Another good book about maintaining a connection with oneĀ“s cultural heritage. Bilingual. The protagonist has a Hawaiian grandmother and Mexican grandfather (I have never seen that combination depicted). It is not immediately clear where it takes place (though specific street names are mentioned). Illustrations are bright and fun with mirrors/windows (?) throughout depicting the Hawaiian landscapes in Marina's mind. Love the pages where Marina admires a portrait of her Hawaiian family as well as the one where she checks out a Mexican coin her grandfather gave her. There are also some funny animals that kids will love to find somewhat hidden in each panel.
